How to Care for Your Handmade Macrame | Cleaning & Care Guide
Handmade macrame is built to last but like any natural fibre piece, it rewards a little care. Follow these simple guidelines and your Twisted Threads pieces will stay beautiful for years.
General Care Rules
- Keep away from direct moisture — cotton macrame is not waterproof. Outdoor pieces should be on a covered verandah, not exposed to rain.
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight — UV exposure will fade and weaken cotton fibres over time. Rotate pieces seasonally if near a sunny window.
- Dust regularly — a light shake outdoors or a gentle pass with a soft brush keeps fibres fresh.
Spot Cleaning
For small marks or stains:
- Mix a small amount of mild detergent with cool water
- Dab (don't rub) with a clean cloth
- Rinse with a damp cloth and allow to air dry completely
- Reshape any fringe while still slightly damp
Washing (for Smaller Pieces)
Some smaller plant hangers can be hand-washed in cool water with a gentle detergent. Lay flat or hang to dry never tumble dry. Avoid wringing, which distorts the knots.
Storing Macrame
If storing a piece, loosely roll or fold it never compress it tightly. Store in a breathable bag (not plastic) in a cool, dry place.
When to Refresh
Over time, fringe can become slightly matted. A light brush-through with a wide-tooth comb or pet slicker brush restores the fluffy texture beautifully.
